The paper titled “A Reasoning Framework for Hardware Refresh Rates in Data Centres” is now published in the IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Computing Journal, January 2018. The research reported provides a comprehensive framework that helps identify the energy saving opportunities, while demonstrating the overall environmental impact related to hardware refresh in data centres. The work sheds new light on key relationships such as the one between hardware utilisation and Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) to drive efficiency. The work has been used to drive major data centre build, retrofit and consolidation projects around Europe, and provided input to various European policies.
